FAQ for COURAGE: Clemson Online Undergraduate Research on Algebra and Graphs Expanded

  1. When is the application deadline?

Applications received on or before Tue May 12, 2020 will be guaranteed full consideration. Applications received after Tue May 12, 2020 will be evaluated provided the program has space available.

  2. When will COURAGE run?

    Mon June 22 - Fri August 7, 2020

  3. What will the workload be like?

The workload will vary from student to student because, e.g., some students will have regular jobs, family obligations, etc. in addition to the REU, and others won’t. We are determined to be as flexible as possible for participants.

  4. What will the format be like? (updated)

Most participants will work in small groups on projects. (We anticipate that participants working on the graph theory projects will do so in groups.) The projects will start with the project leader providing background material on the questions to be considered. Some of this will be provided to participants in writing or by video before the program starts. Groups will meet together by zoom to work for part of the day, and members will work alone for part of the day. Groups will have regular meetings with research mentors and/or grad assistants to report on progress, ask questions, etc. Groups will work collaboratively on write-ups, posters, and presentation using an app like Overleaf.

A small number of participants will work individually on other projects. For these participants, the projects will start with the project leader providing background material on the questions to be considered. Some of this will be provided in writing or by video before the program starts. These participants will work alone for most of the day, and they will have regular meetings with research mentors and/or grad assistants to report on progress, ask questions, etc. Individuals will work on write-ups, posters, and presentation using an app like Overleaf to facilitate sharing with mentors.

A small number of participants will work individually or in small groups on reading courses. Details to be announced soon.

The entire program will meet regularly, though less frequently than for groups/individuals, to discuss aspects of the program, report on progress, socialize, etc.

At the end of the program, we expect to celebrate everyone's accomplishments with group presentations.

We anticipate that all meetings will be conducted on Zoom.

  5. What happens if my group or I don't make any progress on our question?

We actually expect progress to be limited for much of the program. We'll be working on challenging questions that will take time to process and answer. Part of the point of this program is for participants to experience how it is to work on problems that can't be solved in an hour, or a day, or even a week. Struggle and failure are essential components to deep learning.
